The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on the Chatex cryptocurrency exchange for helping cyber ransomware groups bypass sanctions and obtain ransom from victims.

In September 2021, the Ministry of Finance also imposed sanctions on the Suex cryptocurrency exchange for assisting at least eight cyber ransomware groups. More than 40% of all known Suex transactions involve illegal activities.

"Analysis of known Chatex transactions shows that more than half of them are traced directly to illegal or risky activity, including darknet markets, high risk exchanges and ransomware. Chatex is listed under Executive Order (EO) 13694, as amended , for providing material support to Suex and the threat posed by ransomware criminals."

As with Suex, by imposing sanctions on Chatex, the US government intends to close the main channel used by ransomware to obtain ransom from victims.

The Ministry of Finance also imposed sanctions on IZIBITS OU, Chatextech SIA and Hightrade Finance Ltd for assisting Chatex, namely, for providing infrastructure for Chatex's operations.
