The US Cyber Command has prepared an operation against the Russian political and economic elite in case hackers interfere in the 2021 presidential election, The Washington Post reports, citing sources among US officials. At the same time, the interlocutors of the publication indicate that the operation will not affect President Vladimir Putin, because such a step "would be too provocative."

The order to launch the attack could be given "if Moscow tries to interfere in the US elections in 2020 by hacking electoral systems or sowing discord" among voters with the help of hackers and trolls.

It is noted that Cyber Command pays special attention to the successful operation carried out in the fall of 2018. Then the US military "turned off the Internet" based in St. Petersburg Internet Research Agency, seeking to "protect the midterm elections." We are talking about hacking servers, which is why the "troll factory" could not continue its work for some time. According to foreign media reports, Trump's decision to "disconnect" the Internet Research Agency from the Internet is the most aggressive decision by his administration in the fight against Russian interference.

The US military is taking aim at the leadership of the Russian special services, the army and large businessmen. They can be sent messages warning of the consequences of potential election interference. However, the Americans do not want to “influence Russian society as a whole”.
