More than 30 civil society organizations have joined the launch of the Global Encryption Coalition to promote and protect encryption in countries where it is at risk. The new coalition is chaired by a Steering Committee made up of the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT), the Internet Society and Global Partners Digital.
“The spread of COVID-19 has highlighted the need for secure, private Internet communications. Those fortunate enough to have strong internet connections are likely to share more and more sensitive data online. At the same time, governments around the world are considering policies that compromise the security of this data, ”said Greg Neuheim, senior consultant at CDT and director of the Freedom, Security and Technology Project. "Encryption allows people to have a private and secure digital life."
Working with a rapidly growing community of companies and technologists, CDT and the coalition will help activists in key countries where encryption is at stake, such as Canada, Australia, India, and Brazil, to counter proposals that weaken encryption. “The coalition will alert technologists to encryption threats around the world and create mechanisms by which they can do expert analysis to mitigate these threats,” said Mallory Nodel, chief technology officer at CDT.
“CDT is very pleased to be able to provide expert analysis, global collaboration and a voice in support of local efforts to secure encryption,” added Neuheim.
“The Internet Society is thrilled to be joining the efforts of the Center for Democracy and Technology and Global Partners Digital to form a Global Encryption Coalition,” said Jeff Wilbur, senior director of the Online Trust at the Internet Society. “With a global health pandemic driving an increase in our daily activities and communications on the Internet, encryption is becoming more important than ever to keep people and countries safe. We look forward to working with the global movement of coalition members focused on promoting and protecting the use of strong encryption policies and practices around the world. "
