Tesla, which has partnered with Trend Micro for several years on the Zero Day Initiative and the annual Pwn2Own event, will offer researchers its hacking vehicle for the second time. As a reward for hacking an electric car, participants in the competition are offered large cash prizes and a Tesla Model 3 car.

Recall that last year, a team of researchers was able to hack a Tesla Model 3 electric car on the last day of the Pwn2Own 2019 competition. The Fluoroacetate team managed to hack the electric car through its browser. Using a vulnerability in the JIT compilation of the page rendering module, they were able to execute the code on the Tesla Model 3 firmware and display a corresponding notification on the display of its infotainment system.

As part of the Pwn2Own competition this year, participants will be able to win not only Tesla Model 3, but also a cash reward of up to $ 500,000. Prizes are divided into different levels, depending on the difficulty of the hack. The top-tier prize requires a very sophisticated hack to be done - log in through a tuner, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or modem and then execute the code on a VCSEC, Gateway or Autopilot system. The prize for this hack is $ 500,000.

Other cash prizes of $ 100K and $ 400K will be awarded to researchers who can execute code in one or two different subsystems, respectively.
