A new study by MasterCard shows that Europeans want to enjoy their vacations without cash.
Thus, according to the study, people across Europe prefer payment cards on vacation more than at other times: 91% of them have their cards at hand when traveling, while when the vacation ends, only 60% do so, and more than half (53%) of the respondents would like to be able to pay more with cards on vacation.
Among the main reasons why Europeans use cards are convenience (65%), fear of cash theft (41%), security (38%), unwillingness to carry cash (37%), speed of payments (34%) and better control of expenses (30% ). In addition, 44% of Europeans are convinced that cash will soon become a thing of the past, thanks to the development of innovations.
Europeans value their time on vacation, 51% of them believe that finding an ATM is a waste of time that could be used for relaxing on the beach or walking around the city. There are, however, some small expenses where Europeans prefer cash, especially for small purchases: postcards (85%), ice cream and snacks (84%), tips (83%), taxis (77%) and souvenirs (61%).
This report presents the results of an online survey of 3,310 respondents (over 18) in the following eight countries: Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom, France, Poland and Ukraine. Everyone has been on vacation for at least two consecutive days in the past year. Everyone has a debit and / or credit card.
According to the study, the percentage of European consumers who would like to pay more with a card: Ukraine (70%), Poland (66%), France (59%), Spain (56%), Italy (52%), Great Britain (43%) , Germany (42%), Sweden (40%). On average in Europe (53%).
Note that in Ukraine, according to the results of the first quarter of 2021, the number of active credit cards increased by 156 thousand - up to 8.233 million units.
Despite this, mobile payments are actively developing in Europe and around the world. Of course, so far they cannot be compared with card payments in popularity, but they are slowly occupying their niche in the market of alternative payments.
We would like to remind that recently MTS (Russia), AK BARS Bank and MasterCard presented bank cards for making purchases from smartphones using the Mobile MasterCard PayPass contactless technology.
