Together with the head of a well-known online market, we analyzed the risks faced by online shoppers

Purchase safety is the most important criterion for the buyer when choosing a seller.
Despite the explosive growth of online shopping in Ukraine, many consumers still give up the benefits of online shopping. And one of the main reasons for this is security concerns.

We asked expert Viktor Kirichenko, head of the online market Bigl.ua, what online shoppers are at risk, why it is safer to make purchases on large marketplaces, and how to avoid online fraud.

Risky shopping on the Internet

Online shoppers are most at risk when they pay for online purchases by prepaying to the merchant's personal card. Having contributed money, they may never receive the goods, or they may receive the goods in the wrong quality and form in which they ordered.

According to Viktor Kirichenko, purchase safety is the most important criterion for the buyer when choosing a seller. Of course, the buyer wants to be sure that the money will be returned to him in the event of a problem. It is in this context, Viktor notes, that the marketplace is a more reliable place to buy. He can give the buyer similar guarantees, unlike many online stores.

In particular, the largest marketplaces in Ukraine - Bigl.ua, Prom.ua, insure all purchases made through the basket for an amount of several thousand hryvnias. Thus, they guarantee the security of the transaction.

The expert also notes the importance of the fact that when making a purchase through trading platforms, the buyer's personal data is reliably protected. And the delivery services offered by the sellers are proven. In addition, in a marketplace, it is impossible to cheat ratings and reviews.

How to protect yourself from online fraud

A recommendation not to transfer money to the personal cards of the seller from whom you make an order for the first time will help to avoid 100% risk. According to Victor, it is worth choosing a postpaid courier delivery whenever possible, in which the buyer will have the opportunity to check his order and make sure its availability and quality.

If the online store does not provide the possibility of courier delivery, you should choose mail and cash on delivery, where it will also be possible to check the contents of the parcel before payment.

Dealing with unscrupulous sellers

Unfortunately, online shoppers are not immune from scammers and scammers. It often happens that, for example, after transferring 100% of the payment for the goods to the card, the seller stops communicating. Here, again, those who made a purchase on the marketplace have more chances to quickly resolve the situation. According to Viktor Kirichenko, the first thing to do is to contact the site. There is a great chance that the problem will be solved quickly and painlessly for the buyer.

In some cases, unfortunately, if we are really talking about targeted fraud, you will have to contact the law enforcement agencies.
