Consumers in twelve major European countries spent a total of almost € 180 billion on online purchases last year. This is 10 billion euros more than a year earlier. According to experts, e-commerce, especially within the EU, is growing.

This is reported in its report "E-commerce in Europe" logistics company PostNord after polling 11,000 consumers from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Great Britain, Sweden and Germany. As the Scandinavian postal company found out, an increasing number of Europeans make regular purchases in online stores and spend on average more than before.

In addition, cross-border e-commerce is becoming more and more popular. Compared to the previous year, the number of Europeans who made at least one purchase in a foreign online store increased by 11 million. This type of shopping is the most popular in Scandinavia, where 70% of consumers made cross-border purchases. This is more than in the UK (58%) and Germany (53%).

“Consumers are looking for a wider range of products, brands, deals and better prices. They have access to all of this when they shop in foreign online stores, ”said Olof Kalgren, marketer at PostNord.

According to the report, the largest average check for an online purchase in the UK is € 1,028. For comparison: in Scandinavia, consumers spend an average of 549 euros on purchases on the Internet, in Italy - 295 euros.

In all European markets, the most popular product categories are clothing and footwear, consumer electronics and books. But online grocery shopping is gaining popularity, especially in the UK, but also in Germany and France.

In most of the countries surveyed, debit and credit cards are the most popular online payment method. In many European countries, with the exception of Scandinavia and Belgium, PayPal and similar payment solutions are also popular.
