European Union countries using mobile apps to curb the spread of coronavirus must ensure that those apps comply with privacy guidelines, Reuters reported. In particular, they should avoid using personalized location data of people, the European Commission said.
These recommendations are part of a unified European approach to the use of technology to combat COVID-19. They came after several EU countries released various apps, prompting criticism from data privacy activists.
Earlier, another organization - the Council of Europe - expressed concern that the coronavirus pandemic is becoming an excuse for exaggerating the fight against fake information. Separately, the Commissioner of the Council of Europe mentioned Russia and Hungary in this context.
In early April, Roskomsvoboda, together with the Belarusian human rights organization Human Constanta, launched an interactive map of violations of digital rights. It will display countries and such types of violations as surveillance, censorship, control of communications, etc. The facts of restriction of the rights and freedoms of citizens were recorded in Russia, China, Israel, Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Iran, Singapore, Great Britain, South Korea and other countries.
