In the cybercriminal environment, the demand for kits used for the rapid and mass creation of phishing sites has grown significantly. In parallel, the authors of such tools have raised the prices of their goods.
According to researchers from the Group-IB team, in 2021 the number of phishing website builders on hacker forums more than doubled. The number of persons willing to sell these sets has grown by about the same amount.
The increased demand has led to an increase in the average cost per phishing kit. Thus, the amount increased by 149% and was fixed at $ 304. Group-IB noted that the growing popularity of these tools is due to the simplicity of their creation and an easy way of earning money.
As you know, cybercriminals try to disguise their phishing sites as online services and projects owned by large corporations. To do this, attackers need big names. In 2019, the most used brands by phishers were Amazon, Google and Office 365.
According to Group-IB experts, sometimes free phishing kits can be found on hacker forums. As a rule, such "generosity" can indicate the presence of backdoors that will transmit all compromised data to the author.
In 2021, the Group-IB Threat Intelligence system identified over 16,000 unique phishing kits.
