According to Alexander Karpov, director of the Ukrainian Interbank Association of Members of EMA Payment Systems, in a recent interview, $ 16 billion was stolen from customers' bank cards in 2014. More than half of this amount was stolen from the United States. One reason is that chip technology (EMV) has only recently been introduced in the United States. And all the disadvantages that are inherent in the magnetic stripe have led to such consequences.

Also, Mr. Karpov said that in terms of the ratio of the number of cards to the population in the world, the USA, Great Britain and a number of other countries are in the lead. But Ukraine has also significantly strengthened its position. The number of cards issued in our country has exceeded the number of the population. And 75% of citizens actively use cards. “I think these indicators will grow in our country,” the director of EMA is sure.

Alexander Karpov also gave some tips on how to improve the security of his card. According to him, security depends not only on the type of card (chip or magnetic stripe). The user must first of all set limits on cash withdrawals or online payments within the limits that are typical for him.

In addition, users are often unaware that they can have two cards connected to one account. They can be stored in different places, and in case of theft or loss of one card, block it and use another.

Alexander also reminded that it is necessary to connect SMS banking. “Someone thinks that 5 hryvnia for SMS-informing is expensive. However, if you find out about fraudulent activities with your card two days later, you will understand that UAH 5 is not much. It is necessary to control the current operations on your card, ”said the director of the Ukrainian Interbank Association of Members of EMA Payment Systems.
