US federal intelligence agencies such as the National Security Agency (NSA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) fear malicious online ads as much as ordinary users, and use blockers to mitigate this potential threat.

According to a letter to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) written by US Senator Ron Wyden, the United States Intelligence Community (IC) frequently uses ad blockers.

IC has reviewed all recommendations from the US Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency and the US National Security Agency and has implemented corporate policies and technology controls in line with government guidelines and industry best practices for ad blocking. IC has implemented web-based ad blocking technologies and uses information from multiple layers, including domain name system information, to block unwanted and malicious advertising content.

The NSA and the Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have previously provided guidelines encouraging the use of ad blockers. However, federal agencies are currently not required to follow these guidelines. Wyden suggested that OMB oblige intelligence agencies to use ad blockers.
