some encoders aren't compatible with certain types of software, the one that usually works is the default program, but they are buggy, some i've tried at least but... you should try exeba and thejerm to see if they work, if they don't they'll obviously give you errors

i think it's pretty obvious what to do in these kinds of situations, first of all the person (cashier) who you took your items to doesnt have the right to keep the card, even if it's store policy, try taking it away from him/her and if you can't then just start bitching and walk in a direction...
